Daylight Savings Time

Daylight savings time is one of the few times of the year when I see the sun rise. I was up because Daisy, who has zero interest in daylight savings time, was barking for her breakfast.

Saturday was a washout but the sun came out this afternoon.
Daisy, who has been very good lately, received this antler from the Rhinebeck Farmers Market. She seems to be enjoying it quite a bit.

This red fox has been prowling around all weekend.

I was lucky to get these shots with Daisy standing behind me, barking.

Sarah is working on a quilt. Daisy is keeping her antler close, just beneath her chin.

A soggy Saturday morning gave way to sunshine and bacon skies by afternoon.

While Sarah worked on an English essay, Jen, Daisy and I visited Poets’ Walk, overlooking the Hudson in Red Hook.

After our return, Daisy ended up in a face-off with a rather large coyote. Daisy barked ferociously, causing the coyote to retreat — but then it turned and stared Daisy down. It was a bit unnerving.

After dinner, Sarah taught Jen a bit of ukulele. I am hoping we can form a ukulele orchestra.

Jen found an inchworm atop Burger Hill this afternoon. Daisy was disappointed not to be off leash, but it was a perfect late September day and Burger Hill was teeming with Instagrammers.

Our Egret spent much of the weekend standing on the kayak.

Sarah took home no ribbon today from her show at Southlands Foundation. Owen was scratched after he injured his mouth while balking at a jump in warm-up. Both are disappointed but we expect a full recovery.

We had a visit from a Great Egret this morning — a pond first.

We had a sunny, summery weekend, although you wouldn’t have known that looking at this morning’s fog.

On Saturday, Sarah rode indoors so they could set up the outdoor rings for the Southland Foundation’s annual gala. She and Owen showed good form, but it was so hot in the ring they had to cut the lesson short.

While investigating the secret garden, Jen and I heard a wobbly sound overhead. It turned out to be our former swans, Frank and Susan, returning for a visit to the pond.
We spent much of the weekend harvesting (tomatoes, basil, peppers), cooking (hot sauce, pesto), and eating.

Jen, Sarah and Erica cooled off in the pond on Labor Day.

Jen was industrious over the weekend, hanging aluminum pie tins in the garden to scare off the birds that had been eating our tomatoes. So far, it seems effective, although it’s not clear whether the clanging is worth it.

Here’s the view from atop the Ferris wheel at the Dutchess County Fair.

Aunts Julie and Stacey visited for the weekend.

Sarah, shown here on the high swing with her mother, attended all six days of the fair. She won a fistful of ribbons riding Owen in an equitation competition, although she has somewhat less success with him in the hunter competition the following day. She also won a blue ribbon for a ceramic bowl she made at Hidden Valley Camp, and a red ribbon and a Chairman’s Choice award for a glass vase she made there. We are very proud of her!

While Sarah loves the midway rides, I prefer touring the barns, preferably with a 4H milkshake in hand. Here is an especially welcoming goat.
