Sinterklaas 2017
On Saturday we observed Rhinebeck’s 10th Sinterklaas celebration. Sarah was a bit over it this year, but we persuaded her and her friend Anna to pose with this polar bear on East Market Street.

Today we visited the NYS Sheep & Wool Family Fun Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. It is knitting ladies’ nirvana. Not straying far from the ovine theme, Sarah found a litter of border collies for sale. Back at home, Daisy took advantage of the continued warm weather. It was in the mid-seventies both days […]

We attended the Dutchess C0unty Fair on Saturday — my first and only visit this year; Sarah’s fifth. Jen won a blue ribbon for her Rhu-Berry jam. She also took two second place ribbons, including, yet again, a grudging one for her peach-lemon marmalade with no first place ribbon given. The judges — whom Jen […]

Jen ranges far and wide gathering berries. If you look carefully, you can see her trusty companion, Daisy.

On Saturday Daisy had a doggy play-date to climb Burger Hill with Ringo. We stayed to watch the sun set over the Catskills. Later we saw the hunter/super moon. A well-hyped moon. On Sunday, Sarah and Jen visited the Sheep & Wool festival at the Rhinebeck fairgrounds. Sarah made friends with a lamb.

On Saturday we went to the Dutchess County Fair. It was Sarah’s second visit, having gone on Wednesday. She would have been perfectly happy to attend all six days of the fair. Sarah is a particular fan of the rides, including the above-pictured Hamster Dance. She also bungee-jumped. And, of course, she faced off against her dad […]

We celebrated Independence Day with a long weekend at the farm. While Jen gardened, I spent some quality time on the tractor. We watched Chuck and company build a new mud room porch. We marveled at the bizarre fungi growing on our trees. And we spotted a bunny or two.

I guess this is more appropriate for Mother’s Day than for Father’s Day, but this red-eared slider dug a hole for her eggs right in front of the door to Jen’s garden.

They say there’s always good fishing after a rain. When Daisy and I arrived at the farm on Saturday morning (Jen and Sarah were on a Caedmon alumni canoe trip in Narrowsburg), we found it cold and wet: 55 degrees with a driving rain. Eventually the skies cleared, and we saw this heron fishing for a […]

I’m not sure what this fox is carrying — maybe a suitcase? [Update: the fox is carrying its cub. Not a suitcase.] We ourselves traveled light this weekend. Jen was in Boston, and Sarah and I returned to New York tonight so Sarah could attend a Brearley/Collegiate orchestra event Sunday morning. There’s lots going on […]
