Waiting for Spring
We are patiently waiting for spring. It’s been cold and wet, like Daisy’s nose. We found this wild turkey egg while looking, without success, for morels in the woods. Maybe next weekend!

Sarah woke up early Saturday morning and let us know that we had a pair of swans in the pond. The duck between them doesn’t seem too happy about it, but they are quite picturesque and we are glad to have them. They stuck around all weekend. I looked it up online, and swans, it […]

I suppose it’s a sign of the coming spring, but I was not happy to find two Canada geese on the pond Saturday. For their part, they probably weren’t too happy about the curling and hockey results at the Olympics. Daisy relaxed after to helping to shoo the geese.

We attended the Dutchess C0unty Fair on Saturday — my first and only visit this year; Sarah’s fifth. Jen won a blue ribbon for her Rhu-Berry jam. She also took two second place ribbons, including, yet again, a grudging one for her peach-lemon marmalade with no first place ribbon given. The judges — whom Jen […]

Jen enjoyed her traditional Mother’s Day breakfast in bed. We took Daisy for a walk in the woods and found this mother of seven plying the swamp. After years of searching, certain they were beneath our noses, we found morels in the woods. They say that once you find one, you’ll see them everywhere. That’s […]

It is nearly spring, so we have Ring-necked Ducks on the pond. But because we have been away for several weeks, we also have Canada geese. Neither we nor the ducks are pleased. They are, if not evil incarnate, untidy nuisances. Jen tried to run them off, but they just head for the pond. The […]

We had a long weekend for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but spent half of it in New York so that Sarah could attend a Bat Mitzvah and we could attend The Book of Mormon. We drove up Sunday morning to find an icy, but not frozen, pond. I hate these birds deeply (since one […]

On Saturday we went to the Dutchess County Fair. It was Sarah’s second visit, having gone on Wednesday. She would have been perfectly happy to attend all six days of the fair. Sarah is a particular fan of the rides, including the above-pictured Hamster Dance. She also bungee-jumped. And, of course, she faced off against her dad […]

They say there’s always good fishing after a rain. When Daisy and I arrived at the farm on Saturday morning (Jen and Sarah were on a Caedmon alumni canoe trip in Narrowsburg), we found it cold and wet: 55 degrees with a driving rain. Eventually the skies cleared, and we saw this heron fishing for a […]
