Sunny October

Published by under Barn,Dogs,Trees

We had a lovely day today — cool, dry, and sunny.  The trees are starting to turn, and it begins to seem possible that, some day, the barn roof may be finished.  On Saturday, in the rain, we had a visit from Zach Wolf, who farms at Stone Barns (the Rockefeller place in Pocantico Hills) […]

Independence Day 2014

Published by under Dogs,Trees

We arrived at the farm Thursday night in the middle of a monsoon, which claimed about a third of a big maple tree in the back yard.  We had no power until 3:30 a.m., which gave us the opportunity to play Boggle by candlelight.  No plaint here.  It continued raining all day on July 4.  […]

Downed Tree

Published by under Dogs,Trees

The dead apple tree in the field in front of the house finally gave up the ghost.  On the bright side, it’ll make mowing easier — I hit it pretty often with the tractor. Daisy, however, was mournful.

Many leaves are still hanging on, even though Chanukiving is just a few weeks away.

Sheep & Wool

Today, Sarah and I visited the Sheep & Wool Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, with John and Diana Rice and their son Mason.  Jen stayed home to work on Sarah’s Halloween costume.  In addition to sheep, we saw goats, llamas, alpacas, angora rabbits, vincuñas, and many, many, women who seem to spend an inordinate […]

Columbus Day 2013

We had a spectacular Columbus Day weekend, with mild weather, colorful trees, and a happy puppy. On Saturday, Jen, Daisy and I climbed Burger Hill while Sarah was on a playdate with her friend Anna. On Sunday, Daisy graduated from obedience school.  Here she is enjoying a cheese stick.

Days with Daisy

Published by under Dogs,Food,Sarah,Trees

Sarah returned to the hammock this weekend, this time with her pup.   Daisy had a rough week, having been bitten on the nose by an evil border collie in Central Park. She is a water dog through and through.  It’s very hard to keep her out of the pond. Jen has been teaching Daisy to […]

Blooming

Published by under Flowers,Sarah,Trees

It is unmistakably springtime.  The barn swallows have returned. The daffodils are blooming. The tulips — at least those few that are regularly Bobexed, to avoid the predations of the deer — are blooming. And even our peach trees are blooming.  They were Jen’s Mothers’ Day present last year. On Sunday we had such spectacular weather […]

White Christmas

Published by under Sarah,Trees

We had a light dusting overnight on Christmas Eve, just enough to call it a white Christmas. Sarah left her customary note and snacks for Santa and the reindeer. She had a great time!

This Is How We Roll

Published by under Food,Sarah,Trees

On Saturday night we made, as a team effort, what we called Bucatini Alla Mexicana — basically, this recipe, but with chorizo instead of guanciale and with a dried poblano addded to the sauce.  Too spicy, said Sarah, here rolling out the pasta dough.  At the edge of the counter you can see the little […]
