172nd Dutchess County Fair

We attended the Dutchess C0unty Fair on Saturday — my first and only visit this year; Sarah’s fifth.  Jen won a blue ribbon for her Rhu-Berry jam.  She also took two second place ribbons, including, yet again, a grudging one for her peach-lemon marmalade with no first place ribbon given.  The judges — whom Jen […]

Back to the Country

Published by under Horses,Jen,Sarah

We just wrapped up a two-week vacation in which we returned to our roots. Sarah returned to riding, aboard Joanie (the Pony) at Southlands. John Harris returned, with his boys, for a mid-summer visit. Sarah returned to the stage, at the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center’s dance camp. Jen returned to the pond. And I returned […]

Memorial Day 2017

It rained all day on Memorial Day.  I was already a bit sad because this was the first year that Sarah did not march in the Memorial Day Parade. She has, however, kept busy.  In anticipation of camp, less than a month away, Sarah has been practicing the ukulele. We had a number of visitors, […]

Farm Dog

Published by under Barn,Dogs,Sarah

Daisy enjoyed one of the few hours of sunlight we had this weekend. While Jen was in Boston, Sarah and I made pizza and watched To Catch a Thief.  Also, over the weekend, Sarah more or less learned to play the ukulele.

Let it Snow

Published by under Dogs,Sarah

After nearly a month away, we returned to the farm to find plenty of fresh powder for sledding and snowball fights. Sarah hosted the Lawson twins for winter sports and hot cocoa. Here is Sarah, all bundled up.  We had to return early Sunday to avoid another 7″-12″ of snow.

Christmas 2016

Published by under Dogs,Sarah,Trees

We rode out the end of the year at the farm.  While we didn’t have a white Christmas, the holiday was bookended by dustings that produced a little more snow than advertised.  Pictured is “less than an inch.” We had a fine tree with many presents beneath it. Sarah performed her customary ceremonial duties as […]

Thanksgiving 2016

Published by under Food,Sarah

We cooked up a storm for Thanksgiving.  Here is Jen making three pies simultaneously. We got a monster turkey from Frank Vosburgh at Kesicke Farm — 25.75 pounds.  It was the smallest one he had. Julie and Stacey came in uniform. Sarah danced whenever not organizing or playing board games. Her grandfather looked on bemusedly.

Burger Hill

Published by under Dogs,Sarah

We had fine weather today for a walk up Burger Hill. Daisy and Ringo, who were married last year in an informal ceremony officiated by Sarah and her friend Sophie, came along for the walk. Jen harvested our two pumpkins, just in time for Halloween.

Fast Friends

Published by under Animals,Dogs,Sarah

On Saturday Daisy had a doggy play-date to climb Burger Hill with Ringo. We stayed to watch the sun set over the Catskills. Later we saw the hunter/super moon.  A well-hyped moon. On Sunday, Sarah and Jen visited the Sheep & Wool festival at the Rhinebeck fairgrounds.  Sarah made friends with a lamb.

Tomatorama

Published by under Food,Sarah

Jen’s garden is producing more tomatoes than we can comfortably eat, but we are doing our best to keep up, with tomato salads, tomato tarts, BLTs, bagels with cream cheese and tomatoes — you name it.  Jen is even working on a tomato jam. We had a bat mitzvah-shortened weekend in the country, but on […]
