A New Season

Published by under Food,Sarah,Trees

Sarah had her first soccer game of the season on Saturday.  The Ravens (f/k/a Fireballs) played the Red Hook Storm.  Sarah played defense with gusto, élan, and vigor.  The Ravens fell to the Storm 2-1, but there wasn’t a moment when we doubted that the Ravens could win. Sarah and her friend Anna congratulated each […]

Labor Day 2015

Published by under Sarah

I celebrated Labor Day weekend by laboring — I mowed our biggest hayfield. Most of the Burleighs visited.  Lew also labored, reading emails on the back porch. Rinda tucked into Middlemarch on the lawn. Erica seemed skeptical that Sarah was in fact laboring. On Sunday there was a ladies’ swim in the pond — not […]

Dutchess County Fair 2015

Published by under Animals,Food,Sarah

We had a splendid time at the 170th Dutchess County Fair. Sarah met a Doberman-colored bunny, while local matrons looked on in horror. Jen took to the air. I got the chance to bump Sarah. And vice versa. We triumphed in the culinary arts. (No, really, we killed it this year.) And, at the Miracle […]

Chipping In

Published by under Birds,Dogs,Food,Sarah

I was awakened Saturday morning by this pileated woodpecker — not by his hammering away at the maple tree outside our bedroom window, but rather by the sound of wood chips falling on the hood of the car parked below. It’s just as well we had an early start.  We harvested peaches from our nano-orchard.  […]

Country Girl

We just finished a two-week vacation at the farm.  (Or, rather, I finished it.  Sarah and Jen continue to vacation.)  Here’s Sarah having a sip of water after hiking through Ferncliff Forest, just outside the village of Rhinebeck. It’s part of the old Astor estate.  Jen and I climbed the fire tower, which gives spectacular […]

Free as a Bird

This was our last weekend while Sarah is away at camp.  We ate lunch in a restaurant, watched a matinee of an R-rated movie (Trainwreck), gardened, and practiced law.   We didn’t both do all of those things however. We had a rare sighting of Herman, the bachelor muskrat who plies our pond. Daisy struggled to […]

Back to Camp

Published by under Animals,Food,Sarah

This weekend, we took Sarah back to Hidden Valley Camp, in Freedom, Maine.  As is customary, she was promptly given a kitten. We once again stayed in Belfast, Maine, where they have lovely sunsets. We drove eight and a half (but who’s counting?) hours back to Rhinebeck, where black cap season is in full swing.  […]

Fathers Day 2015

Published by under Sarah

I had a very nice Fathers Day, with a good breakfast, a trip to the farmers market, and Sarah’s last soccer game of the season. Unfortunately, the Fireballs came up short against Red Hook.  We did, however, have a season highlight when assistant coach Spike (left), after a particularly dubious call, drew a yellow card for […]

Fireballs Never Give Up

Published by under Flowers,Horses,Sarah

Which is a good thing, because they have only one game left to try to eke out a win.  Here they are after a somewhat lopsided encounter with the Carmel Cyclones. We had a busy weekend.  Sarah graduated from Caedmon on Friday, with attendant ceremonies and parties, and we headed up to the farm Saturday […]

Fishing

Published by under Sarah

We had the Diz family visiting this weekend.  We planned a festive dinner for Saturday, but Daisy ate five veggie burgers before we could sit down.  We rebounded Sunday with a fishing trip with Graham and his mom.  Graham caught two bass and two sunfish.  Later on Sunday, the Rhinebeck Fireballs were shocked by the Yorkville […]
