Sarah presided over a very merry Christmas in her traditional elf capacity, with a little help from her assistant, Daisy. Despite our rather short, pudgy tree, we had a festive time with the entire Burleigh clan. We feasted on gravlax, herring, stollen, and fruit salad. For Xmas dinner, we had country ham and biscuits, as […]

Our Thanksgiving this year included Rinda, Lew, Julie, Stacey, and the Perkins family, four visiting Australians celebrating their first Thanksgiving. We had an 18-pound turkey from Salt Point, together with pecan stuffing, green beans with slivered almonds, creamed onions, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, strawberry jello mold, three kinds of cranberry sauce, and four pies. We […]

A soggy Saturday morning gave way to sunshine and bacon skies by afternoon. While Sarah worked on an English essay, Jen, Daisy and I visited Poets’ Walk, overlooking the Hudson in Red Hook. After our return, Daisy ended up in a face-off with a rather large coyote. Daisy barked ferociously, causing the coyote to retreat […]

Jen found an inchworm atop Burger Hill this afternoon. Daisy was disappointed not to be off leash, but it was a perfect late September day and Burger Hill was teeming with Instagrammers. Our Egret spent much of the weekend standing on the kayak.

Jen, Sarah and Erica cooled off in the pond on Labor Day. Jen was industrious over the weekend, hanging aluminum pie tins in the garden to scare off the birds that had been eating our tomatoes. So far, it seems effective, although it’s not clear whether the clanging is worth it.

Here’s the view from atop the Ferris wheel at the Dutchess County Fair. Aunts Julie and Stacey visited for the weekend. Sarah, shown here on the high swing with her mother, attended all six days of the fair. She won a fistful of ribbons riding Owen in an equitation competition, although she has somewhat less […]

Jen began her birthday with breakfast in bed. It looked like it might be a washout, but the rain stopped in the afternoon to allow a birthday barbecue feast with salmon, London broil, and ribs (surf & turf & sty).

Our summer vacation was not entirely under blue skies. On the bright side, we had our annual visit by John Harris and his boys, with whom I went hiking in the Catskills. As you can see, they were awed by Kaaterskill Falls, the highest waterfall in New York — yes, even taller than Niagara Falls. […]

Today we watched the Memorial Day parade, which each year marches out of a Norman Rockwell picture and makes a right on East Market Street. Jen’s parents and sister visited for the weekend. Jen and Lew chatted on Guy and Maya’s porch. There seem to be more fire trucks every year. We had drinks on […]

Jen returned from a writer’s retreat this morning, just in time for a Mother’s Day brunch at Le Petit Bistro. This afternoon, Jen and Sarah met horses and riders visiting our trails, including Rich Contini, past president of the Landsman Kill Trail Association. Sarah has in fact ridden this horse before. We had a chilly […]
